The stray dogs of Moscow's Metro

The Wall street Journal looks at how the lives of today's stray dogs compares to conditions under communism:

In Soviet times, dogs were barred from Moscow's metro. Today, however, they are so common there -- curling up on empty seats, nuzzling their neighbors, lounging in stations -- that there is even a Web site devoted to them: www.metrodog.ru.
No Dachshunds sighted so far.

And while we're on the subject of Russian dogs, the Daily Doxie's sister site, theScottie News, gained much attention for its big scoop on Vladimir Putin's secret poodle.

Rescue video stars older Dachshund

The wiener dog's name is Scarlett, she was adopted by a Hollywood PR lady, and the video's narrated by Glenn Close.

But don't worry, there's no rabbit boiling. It's just encouragement to consider adopting an older dog.

Hereditary disease threatens purebred dogs

Britain's Daily Telegraph reports:

Many of Britain's most popular dog breeds could be extinct within 50 years because they are so inbred, vets have warned.

Some pedigrees are suffering from a range of worsening health problems because they are being bred from a shrinking gene pool in an effort to create the most sought-after physical characteristics.

Many breeds will die out as a result of hereditary diseases, the vets warn.
Dachshunds, bred to have longer bodies and shorter legs, are increasingly prone to arthritis even if many are living longer than ever.

An update on the Atlanta wiener dog rescue

The Daily Dachshund reported in late April on this rescue mission.
Apparently, lots of progress has been made. But Kristin of Dream Dachshund is not happy to report:

The saddest part is, the AKC had recently inspected the breeder, and she "passed with flying colors." What does that tell you about inspections?
What indeed?

Dry dog food caused human salmonella outbreak

An outbreak of Salmonella infections in people has been traced to contaminated dry dog food, the first time such a link has been uncovered, the Washington Post reported.

Salmonella infections from dry dog food may be an under-recognized source of illness in people, especially young children, officials from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said.

"This is the first time human illness has been linked to dry dog food," said CDC epidemiologist Dr. Casey Barton Behravesh, who co-authored a report on the finding.

Dachshund howls at noon whistle

That has to be the most annoying and prolonged noon whistle the Daily Doxie has ever heard. Frankly, we think Wisaac the wiener dog, is downright restrained in his response. What must he think of humans when he hears such a thing? Frankly, I'm surprised the townspeople put up with it.

Looking for rescue Dachshund in midwestern US?

The Chicago Post-Tribune has an interesting feature on MidWest Dachshund Rescue. The article makes the point that there's no reason to automatically assume rescue dogs come with problems.

"One of the biggest misconceptions is that all dogs in rescue are abused, which is not the case at all," said Lori Biesboer, MWDR Illinois/Indiana representative. "There are many reasons. Most common is that they are owner-surrendered because the owner does not have time to take care of their dog due to work hours; some are moving and cannot take the dog, or it can be due to a death or illness of the owner."

When Hairy Met Shaggy

A dog version of the famous deli scene in When Harry Met Sally. It's part of Lifetime TV's Hollywood Tails series.

Scottie News prefers Meg Ryan to the sheepdog but we think the Australian shepherd is well cast in the Billy Crystal role. As for the Irish Setter at the end, way too chic for the part originally played by Rob Reiner's mother. And did you all know that the "I'll have what she's having" line was improvised?

Discovered: Woody the wiener dog's blog

The Daily Dachshund and Dog News has just learned -- a little bit late -- that Woody the Kentucky wiener dog and children's book hero has his very own blog.

"I spend my time traveling all over the state, along with my sister and business partner, Chloe, " writes Woody the Dachshund. "Together, we talk to children everywhere about the importance of being a good reader and citizen. Currently, I am the star dog in six books - The Adoption, Welcomes a Dad, A New Home, Tails From the Bluegrass, Tails From the Bluegrass II and Mr. Dogwood Goes to Washington."

More on Jerry the Dachshund and his ball machine

(Just a screen shot. Click on link below for the video)

This video of Jerry the Dachshund and his ball launching machine was not only a Daily Doxie hit but a YouTube blockbuster as well. More thn 1.5 million viewers have watched the little wiener dog play with his automatic ball launcher. Now NPR has an exclusive interview with Jerry's master, the machine's inventor, Lam Ngo.

Despite having never made a machine, Ngo set out to invent one that Jerry could use to play fetch all by himself. Ngo, of Cary, N.C., says he spent two years tinkering with parts cannibalized from various machines before hitting on the design for what he calls "Jerry's Ball Machine."

The launcher's key parts include an assembly head from a dot matrix printer, which makes the ball fly straight. It also incorporates a pair of electric screwdrivers, which serve to wind the machine up and release it again. Teaching Jerry to use it was a cinch. "It took about a half a day," Ngo says.
The video was made five years ago when Jerry was a spritely 12 years old. Alas, he is now blind and deaf and no longer plays with the machine. But he's still an internet rockstar to dog fans the world over!

Danish royals try to hush up Dachshund attack

United Press International reports from Copenhagen:

A member of Denmark's Queen's Guards said he required three weeks' sick leave after he was attacked by a royal dachshund while patrolling the palace grounds.

Nikolaj Fogh, 20, said his superiors tried to keep the royal pooch attack quiet, the Copenhagen Post reported Wednesday.

"Of course you are entitled to sue the royal family, but we'd prefer it if you didn't," Fogh quoted a high-ranking officer as saying after the incident.

Maja Fogh, the guard's mother, said it is unfair that the royal family's dogs get special protection from the law.

"Any other dog would have been put down," she said.
This isn't the first time the Danish royals have been involved in a dog scandal.
